Is MyFitnessPal Free? Cost, Trial, What You Get
MyFitnessPal has a free tier, but the features people want are paid. Here is what the free version includes, what MyFitnessPal costs, and a one-time-purchase alternative.
Is MyFitnessPal free?
Partly. MyFitnessPal has a free tier with no time limit, and you can log food with it indefinitely. The catch is that the features most people install it for are paid. The free version gives you calorie and macro logging with the full food database, supported by ads. Barcode scanning moved behind Premium in 2022.
"Free to download" and "free to use the way you want" are different things. If you are happy typing every food and living with ads, the free tier works. If you want the parts that make it convenient, you are looking at a subscription.
How much does MyFitnessPal cost?
Premium is $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Premium+, which adds meal planning, is $24.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
Those are the prices we verified in September 2026. Subscription prices change, vary by country, and depend on whatever promotion is running, so the only number to trust is the one on the store screen at the moment you subscribe. Two things worth knowing before you tap it: a yearly plan is charged up front, and a "per month" figure on an annual plan is the yearly total divided by twelve.
The trial: A free trial of Premium is offered to some new users; the length varies. If you decide it is not for you, we wrote a guide on how to cancel MyFitnessPal.
What people run into
- Barcode scanning, once free, now requires Premium.
- The free tier shows ads between almost every screen.
- Crowd-sourced entries mean two searches for the same food can return different numbers.
- Paying monthly costs almost three times the annual price over a year.
None of that makes MyFitnessPal a bad app. It is known for the largest crowd-sourced food database in the category, and for a lot of people that is worth paying for. It is just worth knowing the model before the renewal hits.
A no-subscription alternative: Silent
Silent is a calorie, macro, habit and fasting tracker for iPhone that costs $3.99 once. There is no free tier that nags you to upgrade, no trial that converts, and no renewal. Every feature is unlocked at purchase, including future updates.
It also keeps your data on your phone. The AI coach runs on-device with Apple Intelligence, so your food log and weight history are never uploaded, because there is no server to upload them to. Steps, sleep and workouts come in from Apple Health.
To be fair about what it is not: Silent is iOS only, and it does not do barcode or photo logging. You type what you ate, or pick a saved meal. If MyFitnessPal's the largest crowd-sourced food database in the category is the reason you use it, that is a real trade-off. If the reason you are here is the price or the privacy, it is the trade-off Silent was built to make.
